Tournament Recap

2019 Champions - Doug & Matthew Norberg

As the sun began to set on the 101st playing of the Annual Winchester Country Club Father & Son Invitational it looked like the competition, held over three days, would need another round to determine the winner.  Traditionally, an 18-hole playoff determines the tournament champion if their is a tie for first place in the overall division.  On Thursday afternoon the teams of Richard Green & David Cammarata-Green (Pine Brook CC), David & Ryan Friel (Vesper CC) and Joe & Brendan Monahan (Winchester CC) were all tied at 1-over par 72.  However, at 5:23 PM, the tournament would take a significant turn, as Winchester Country Club's Doug & Matthew Norberg took sole position of the lead by firing an even-par 71.  As the last 20 groups completed their round no one was able to best the Norberg's stellar round and the duo proudly hoisted the championship trophy for the first time in front of family and friends.

The Norberg's round got off to a rocky start with a bogey on the 1st hole, but quickly rebounded with a birdie on the 2nd.  Another bogey on the 5th was followed by birdies on 6th and 8th holes as the team made the turn at 1-under par.  Two more bogeys on the 10th and 11th didn't crush the Norberg's spirits as they were able to again come back with birdies, this time on 13th and 16th holes.  A bogey on the difficult par four 18th hole was enough to post the only score of even par or better in the past three years of the annual event.

The win was a especially rewarding for the hard-working golfing duo.  Doug is a long-time Club member and single digit handicap, who always has a smile on his face and practices when his time allows.  His work ethic clearly rubbed off on his 20-year old son Matt, who just recently dedicated much of his time to getting better at the game he loves.  The UMass-Amherst junior-to-be is a staple at the Learning Center, finding ways to improve day in and day out.

Once again over 300 teams participated in the longest running father & son tournament in the country.  The event, which began in 1919, attracts teams from all over the country and has become one of the great traditions in all of golf.
